The SolarCap Lighting
system consist of modular, self-contained lighting devices
that can be used for decorative or traffic flow purposes
- powered only by solar energy. It incorporates an ultracapacitor
and "energy cache" technology for energy storage,
instead of the high maintenance rechargeable batteries
that are currently used in solar devices. It can be
used for more than 10 years within a wide operating
temperature range of -13F to 140F. The solar energy
is converted into soft light emitting diodes (LED) lighting
in the evening. Full charge takes about one hour under
direct sunlight and up to eight hours in shady or indirect
lighting conditions (~8 hours at daily average of 10,000
Lux to full charge). The light will stay on for up to
12 hours with fully charged EnergyCache. Available in
six colors (green, blue, white, red, orange, amber),
these tiles are incorporated in sidewalks, roadways,
plazas, airports, medians, patios, driveways, pool decks,
stairways, fountains, and lawns. Luminance varies with
the color, for example, amber and blue measure only
3-4, while the green and white measure 14-15. These
lights are encased in a strong polycarbonate housing,
which can be driven on by non-commercial vehicles without
damage. Compressive strength is 200 psi (ASTM C67).
It is completely waterproof and UV and scratch resistant.
It has an automatic on/off at ambient luminance level
of 150-350 lux. Dimensions are 8 x 8 x 2-3/8 inches,
weighing 5.9 lbs; 4x 8 x 2-3/8 inch.
